Genre: Classical

These are all of Arthur Rubinstein’s pre-World War II Chopin EMI recordings, save for three Mazurkas recorded in 1930 that the pianist remade in 1938/39 for the complete Mazurka cycle included here. Rubinstein’s earliest Chopin efforts display a sense of daring and élan that his (usually) note-perfect LP-era remakes do not consistently capture. The Scherzi and Polonaises especially bear this out, while the Mazurkas’ forceful melodic projection and rhythmic joie-de-vivre radically differ from the pianist’s more fastidiously considered stereo versions. The Nocturnes are mostly suave and brisk, decidedly less angular and emphatic than Rubinstein’s 1949 mono LP readings.

Admittedly the concertos sound a bit facile and slapdash when judged against Rubinstein’s impeccably poised stereo E minor and magical live F minor with Giulini (BBC Classics), and both first-movement opening ritornellos are truncated, as was the shellac-era norm. But the Barcarolle justifies Rubinstein’s pride in this 1928 recording, notably in the coda’s gorgeously-meted-out rubato.

EMI’s transfers are the same clean, slightly overfiltered ones that the label published in the early ’90s as part of its “References” series. Although Ward Marston’s 1999 RCA Rubinstein Edition restorations wring more focused results from identical source material, the differences are more subtle than striking. The bottom line: if you want Rubinstein’s early Chopin in a space-saving, budget-priced boxed set, this EMI Icons repackaging is the way to go.
